| IHI VF22, VF34, VF39, VF43 & VF48 Bolt-on Turbos for 02-07 WRX/STi |

IHI turbos are a direct bolt-on for the 02-07 WRX, utilizing the factory mounting points and attaching to the factory oil and coolant lines. Although these are a great upgrade for a 2.0L WRX, any 2.5L WRX should be considering some of the larger options such as a Deadbolt 18G or bigger as the power gains from the IHI turbos will be minimal (The VF39 is the OEM 04-06 STi turbo, the VF43 is stock 2007 STi turbo, and the VF48 is the 08 STi turbo so they are not upgrades for these cars). |
IHI VF22: The IHI VF-22 turbo is the largest of the VF-series turbos. With its significantly increased turbine housing, the VF22 turbo is capable of producing upwards of 310 whp* on an EJ20. The downside of this turbo is the older center cartridge design and larger compressor housing, which makes for slower spool up but more top-end than the other VF series turbos.
IHI VF34: Good for about 290whp* on an EJ20; the VF-34 is noted for its rapid spool up and good midrange. This is an excellent street/auto X turbo due to the advanced center cartridge design and smaller compressor housing.
IHI VF39: The IHI VF39 comes stock on the 04-06 US Market STi, and is a well proven upgrade path for the WRX. The VF39 uses a thrust bearing setup with a P18 exhaust housing capable of 285 whp* on the EJ20. If you are considering the VF39, we highly suggest checking out the VF43 as it is a better setup in the same class.
IHI VF43: The IHI VF43 comes stock on the 2007 STi. It has almost identical features of the VF39 with a thrust bearing and a P18 exhaust housing, but the wastegate opening is larger to relieve boost creep issues. The VF43 is capable of 290 whp* on the EJ20.
IHI VF48: The IHI VF48 comes stock on the 2008 STi. Not much is known about this turbo yet as it has recently been introduced, but it has already made huge power numbers on the 08 STi.
* Wheel horsepower numbers provided are estimates to help turbo comparisons. They are by no means exact prediction of the power output as these numbers can easily fluctuate 15% based on many factors ranging from type of dyno to supporting modifications.
