The Subaru Impreza WRX & STi are formidable cars from the factory, but once you get one you just have to make more power. With more power comes more risk, as you start to tweak your Suby you will notice things changing. At JSC Speed we are a huge advocate of in cabin gauges. The most important gauges to start with are boost and EGT. But be careful with gauges you generally get what you pay for, some gauges are inexpensive but they are usually not as accurate. This is the case with mechanical boost gauges, most Autometer boost gauges are mechanical and thus inexpensive as well as slow to react and at times inaccurate. When getting a boost gauge be careful, and select an electronic gauge if funding permits you to.
The next gauge we recommend at JSC is an EGT gauge this will allow you to keep your engine out of danger; EGT stands for Exhaust Gas Temperature. With this gauge you will be able to see if you are running too lean by watching your EGT readings, this is a good gauge for safety and it is best when the gauge has a warning feature to let you know when you have passed a certain threshold (usually above 820 degrees Celsius or 1600 degrees Fahrenheit). While the Boost gauge is easy to install the EGT gauge requires drilling and tapping your stock manifold so keep this in mind when purchasing.
After Boost and EGT are covered a good Wideband gauge for tuning is definitely the top priority, at this point your WRX/STi is probably not close to stock anymore. A Wideband Air Fuel gauge (NOT Narrow Band which are a lot cheaper but are no good for tuning) is probably the most important tuning tool a Turbo car owner can have. When you are purchasing a wideband gauge it is important to remember Wideband AFR (air fuel ratio) reading are useless unless you can data log them and therefore tune with them. Since this is the case we STRONGLY suggest you decide what EMS (engine management system) you will be using in the future before you buy a wideband. This is because the EMS will most likely be data logging your wideband AFR gauge and you want the two to be compatiable. For instance if you were going with an AEM Standalone EMS we would suggest an AEM UEGO gauge, this way your Wideband will plug into your EMS with no problems. So unless you want to make expensive mistakes only buy a wideband after you have decided on the EMS you will use to tune your vehicle. After these three important gauges we suggest looking into oil pressure the fuel pressure. Now you are ready to shop check out our gauge pods and our gauges above, keep in mind gauges are either 52mm or 60mm and you must get the correct pods to hold the size gauges you are buying. There is a wide selection above and we hope you enjoy it.
