| 02-07 WRX & STi Exhaust 101: Downpipe |
   |
Downpipe:
Manifold & Uppipe -
Cat-Back Exhaust -
Turboback Exhaust -
Rear Muffler |
 |
The stock WRX/STi downpipe is in two parts; the first (light blue) contains a catalyst designed to limit turbo spool and create backpressure, the second (dark blue) contains the emissions catalyst and attaches to a cat-back exhaust. The downpipe configuration is the same for all 02-07 WRX & STi models.
NOTES:
1. Almost all aftermarket downpipes combine the 1st and 2nd downpipe into one-piece, except Perrin which offers both pieces separately with high-flow cat sections.
2. The catalysts in the downpipe help prevent boost spikes, particularly on 2.5 liter vehicles; removing one or both of the cats reduces backpressure, making the turbo spool faster but often creating a 'boost spike' condition.
3. The stock downpipe uses a 2.5" diameter ball and socket attachment flange, which allows for some movement in the exhaust system. Most aftermarket downpipes utilize a flat flange, which makes them difficult to bolt to the stock exhaust. We reccomend using a 3" flat-flanged catback with 3" flat-flanged downpipe for optimal flow and the elimination of leaks.
4. Removing both catalysts will set off a check engine light (CEL). While this does not damage the vehicle, it is annoying and will keep you from using your cruise control. The only way to properly eliminate this is through an ECU reflash.
