The Scion tC is one of those cars that you just can't keep stock. There are so many ways to customize your tC, and adding aftermarket gauges have become one of the most popular modifications. At JSC Speed we are a huge advocate of in-cabin gauges. The rule of thumb with performance gauges is that you generally get what you pay for, in many cases sacrificing accuracy for price. This may not be a problem if you aren't running forced induction, but if you are, be careful! This is the case especially with mechanical boost gauges, as most mechanical boost gauges are inexpensive as well as slow to react and at times inaccurate. An electronic gauge is always recommended over a mechanical gauge if you have the means.
If you don't need a boost gauge, the next gauge we recommend at JSC is an Exhaust Gas Temperature gauge, commonly referred to as an EGT gauge. This important diagnostic tool will allow you to monitor the efficiency of your engine and be instantly alerted if abnormally high temperatures are registered. An EGT gauge is recommended as an added safety measure when running any heavily modified car, and it functions best when the gauge has a peak/warning feature to let you know when you have passed a certain threshold (usually above 820 degrees Celsius or 1600 degrees Fahrenheit). While a Turbo boost gauge is relatively easy to install, the EGT gauge requires drilling and tapping your stock exhaust manifold. The difficulty of an install procedure is always something to keep in mind when selecting your gauge setup.
After boost and EGT are considered, a quality wideband AFR (air/fuel ratio) gauge is always recommended and essential to the proper tuning of a turbo or supercharged Scion. When selecting a wideband gauge, it is important to remember that wideband readings are obsolete without the ability to data log. Because not all wideband gauges are compatible with all EMS systems, we strongly suggest you decide what engine management system you will be using before the purchase of a wideband gauge. For instance, if you are planning on going with a AEM Standalone EMS, we would suggest an AEM UEGO wideband AFR gauge. Oil or fuel pressure gauges can be added to the three mentioned above for even more diagnostic versatility.
