| JSC Speed Project SRT-4: Perrin Short Shifter Installation |
Perrin Short Shifter: I said goodbye to the OEM butter-churner, AKA pool vacuum, AKA walking stick. Yes, I'm talking about the stock shifter with it's crappy press-on knob that comes off everytime you slam it (or maybe I'm just an ape). At any rate, I decided it was time for a new shifter, and Perrin was the one. This is a very straightforward install, it takes about 45 minutes. Here's how it's done:
1. Remove the console (2 screws in the cupholder, 4 in the compartment, pull the ebrake all the way up, slide the seats back and pull it out). Pull off the stock knob (just yank hard on it, or drive normally)
2. Remove the shift cables from the stock shifter (just pull them towards you (note the bottom picture below).
3. Remove the 3 8mm nuts holding the shifter in place and lift it out of the car
4. Pull the OEM shifter out of the stock housing, take off the plastic shifter bushing and pop it onto the Perrin shifter. Loosen the 3 perrin set screws with the provided allen wrench and adjust it to be an exact copy of the stocker. Then pop it into the housing.
5. Notice the picture on the top row below, far right -- make sure the spring is around the balljoint on the Perrin shifter. It needs to be on either side of the ball and locked against the protrusion on the base (just copy the picture).

6. With the Perrin shifter in stock stock shift base, reinstall it on the car, install the 3 8mm nuts, and push the shift cables on to the new Perrin shifter.
7. Give it a wiggle, make sure you can interface each gear smoothly and your side-to-side is smooth.
8. Now adjust the shifter to whatever height you want, make sure it works in each gear, and reinstall the console.
9. BEFORE YOU PUT THE PERRIN STICKER ON THE KNOB: Put everything back together and tighten the knob all the way down on the shifter, this way it will be straight and centered.
