| JSC Speed Project SRT-4: Prothane Motor Mount Inserts |
10/15/04, Prothane Motor Mount Inserts: The SRT-4 is plagued with wheel-hop, like most front wheel drive cars are. We decided to install the Prothane inserts since this is a street car and some aftermarket mounts can have some excessive vibration, etc. Plus, for under $30, you can't really go wrong with the Prothane units -- especially since we're planning on doing all the suspension bushings at a much later, more motivated date. These mount inserts are a cinch, since they go into the torque arms which aren't load-bearing mounts, you don't really need to jack the motor up. Click on any image below for a larger view

The pictures above are in no particular order. The upper mount by far gets the prize for easiest installation, period. Remove the bolt (18mm if I remember correctly), stick the prothane insert through the stock rubber mount, put the provided washer over the mount, put the bolt back in and torque it down to 85 lb-ft. The bottom mount is a little more complicated since it is behind the plastic cover. You can remove the cover by taking out the bolts and plastic clips (four in total), or if you're as lucky as I am, the plastic will break during the removal and then you can leave it on. This is also provided that you can fit a ratchet between the cover and the bolt and get it off as you back the bolt out.
After installing these inserts, the car definately launches better. I'm sure a complete mount would make more of an extreme difference, but for a street car, these $30 polyurethane inserts are definately a great piece. |
