JSC Speed Project 02 WRX: Complete Brake Upgrade
With this install the following was upgraded on my 2002 WRX: Front and rear Powerslot rotors, EBC green stuff brakes, Techna-Fit stainless steel brake lines, and Motul brake fluid. The upgrade was very difficult seeing that I had no experience upgrading the brake system on my car. Like all other upgrades it just took lots of time to figure out what the correct way was to do the install. The stock brake setup on my car really was not getting the job done- I was beginning to feel that the stock brake setup was not going to handle the mods I had on my car and the mods I wanted to put on my car. Stopping is very important when it comes to cars- this is something that most people know but sometimes forget when caught up in other areas of their cars. If you have an upgraded car and a stock brake system it is time to start thinking about upgrading- you feel safer and you can really stop on a dime- it is great!!
Taking the stock rotors off can be tricky- you must be sure to screw in a bolt in the hole provided to release the rotor- prying them off will do no good. Once the rotor is off you have to make sure you are putting the new rotor on the cleanest surface possible- a steel wire brush makes for a good tool when cleaning off rust. The rotors a not too hard to install on the car- just make sure you are putting the front left on the front left and so on- this part is not that difficult but can be messed up easy. The EBC brake pads are not hard to install either- I though brake pads would be tough but really they drop in. It is however very important o torque the calipers and all other bolts to the proper settings after you are bolting them back on. The Subaru manual is a good book to have when you do this upgrade- all the specs and directions are in the book. Also with new rotors you must use new brake pads- using old pads is very dangerous and should never be done. The new lines are an easy install too- the plastic brackets on them are not the best but if you don't screw them in too hard you are good. The bleeding of the brake system is the tricky part with this install- be sure to get good directions when you are doing this. One tip for that I learned- if you try to bleed the system with the calipers not pressed against the rotor or without brake pads in them at all your going to have a big problem. This happened to my on one of my calipers- I shot a piston out of my caliper like a shotgun. The piston broke the rubber seal and I had to order more- add 2 days to this install since subby didn't have them instock. This got done the correct way after I learned my mistake- glad I could pass some knowledge on. One thing I did correct- the directions that come with the Powerslot rotors for breaking them in- follow them word for word. I have heard nightmare stores of people not seating the pads correct and bad things happening. Everything turned out just fine with this install- I have had them in my car since November 2005 and I am still stopping.
