A lightweight flywheel is a great addition to any car, especially turbocharged vehicles. The reduced rotating mass can get you into the higher RPM range faster; reducing turbo spool time and making for quicker ETs and general launches. However there is a dark side to a lighter flywheel: RPMs fall off faster. This can drop you out of your powerband too quickly. Also, be aware that using too light of a flywheel can trigger check engine lights in certain applications.

Aluminum flywheels are inherently lighter than a steel flywheel of the same size, but aluminum flywheels require a removable, steel friction surface. The plus side of this replaceable surface is you will not need to get the flywheel resurfaced by a machine shop, rather just buy a new disc. The flip side of that is a steel, or chrome moly, flywheel is one piece with no extra hardware to replace or worry about.

If you are planning to daily drive your 03-06 Evolution 8 &9 on the street, in traffic, you do not want this light of a flywheel. The Prolite is a RACE ONLY flywheel. The Prolite also features an induction-hardened integral ring gear, and is durable and thick enough to be resurfaced. Certified to SFI Specification 1.1.
